It is probably safe to say Wakefield forward Nigel King is most comfortable on the gridiron. As a wide receiver for the Wolverines, King has garnered national attention with 8 touchdowns. His scholarship offers include NC State, LSU, Louisville, and Maryland. Tonight he added a buzzer beater to his resume.
With less than a second remaining, King hit a jumper to give the Wolverines a 49-47 Cap-7 conference victory over their rivals Millbrook.
The home Wildcats led by one after three quarters and were up by four points in the 4th quarter after a #5 three-pointer. Xavier Saddler-Lee answered with a three of his own and the teams traded blows after that exchange.
Down the stretch, Millbrook seemed to be in control, taking a 47-44 lead after Jarrick Brown found Donzell Hill. Dominique McDonald knotted the game at 47 with a three-pointer. McDonald’s basket with under a minute left set up the heroics from King.
Wolverine Maurice Nash led all scorers with 17 points, showing off his improved jumper and ever-present threat in the paint. King, McDonald, and Saddler-Lee each added 7 points.
Hill was the leading scorer for the Wildcats, with 15 points. Brown and Tyrel Tate put in 12 and 11 points respectively.
This was only the second loss for Millbrook(6-2) on the season. Next up for the Wildcats are the tough Sanderson Spartans(6-2), Friday at Sanderson. Wakefield(9-1) has jumped out to an impressive start, but will be tested more as their schedule gets tougher. Next up for Wolverines is the struggling, young Pride from Leesville Rd(1-6), who will be looking for a statement win at home Friday.
