Conference Tournaments go full trottle tonight
Tuesday February 16, 2010
Tuesday night is always a packed night for high school basketball, but tonight someone's season could end and emotions run high.
In the Pac-6 things have been up and down all week. After initially announcing that the tournament would be cancelled due to time constraints, the tournament will go on. Things tip off at the higher home team’s location on Wednesday.
#1 seed Riverside receives a bye and will play the winner of #5 seed Southern Durham and #4 Seed Hillside(at Hillside) on Thursday at tournament host school East Chapel Hill.
In other games #2 seed East Chapel Hill will host #7 Person County on Wednesday and #6 Northern Durham travels to #3 Jordan the same day.
-Person County @ East Chapel Hill winner plays Northern Durham @ Jordan winner 8:30pm at East Chapel Hill Thursday
-Southern Durham @ Hillside winner plays Riverside 7pm at East Chapel Hill Thursday
Conference skinny: Riverside’s tournament to lose. The Pirates are #1 in our rankings and one of the best teams in the state, but do not be surprised if the disciplined Wildcats from East Chapel Hill make a run. Last season Southern Durham made an epic run thru the tournament, this season that team could be Hillside.
The top heavy Greater Neuse gets underway Tuesday night.
#4 seed West Johnston takes on #5 seed Southeast Raleigh, #8 seed Smithfield-Selma has the task of stopping #1 Garner. These games will take place at Garner 6pm and 7:30pm respectively.
In Knightdale, #3 Clayton will face #6 East Wake at 6pm and #7 Harnett Central plays #2 Knightdale at 7:30pm.
-West Johnston vs. Southeast Raleigh winner plays SSS vs. Garner winner Wednesday
-East Wake vs. Clayton winner plays Harnett Central vs. Knightdale winner Wednesday(check back for times)
Conference skinny: The Garner Trojans are odds on favorites to win, but are probably hoping the Knightdale Knights are knocked off before Friday. The Knights are the only conference team to topple the Trojans twice this season.
The Tri-9 was the only conference with a play-in game. Fuquay-Varina took care of Green Hope in that game and get top seeded Apex (at Apex) as their prize on Tuesday, 7:30 tip time.
#3 seed Panther Creek hosts #6 seed Lee County 7pm Tuesday at Panther Creek
#5 seed Cary travels to #4 Athens Drive 7:30pm Tuesday at Athens Drive
#7 Holly Springs plays at #2 seed Middle Creek 7:30pm Tuesday
-Holly Springs @ Middle Creek winner vs. Lee County @ Panther Creek winner at Panther Creek Wednesday 5:30pm
-Cary @ Athens Drive winner vs. Fuquay-Varina @ Apex winner at Panther Creek Wednesday 8:30pm
Conference skinny: Top seed Apex is ranked high in our rankings like the other conference top seeds. With only a single conference loss by one point, they are as well equipped as anyone to win their respective tournament. Panther Creek could shake things up if they do not go down to Lee County. The Panthers are the only team to defeat Apex and Middle Creek in conference play.
The Cap-7 maybe the most intriguing of conferences, with the top 5 seeds being cable of making a run to the championship. Millbrook won the tie-breaker with Enloe and receives top seed. They will be idle until Thursday night.
#5 seed Sanderson plays at #4 seed Broughton Tuesday at 7pm
#6 seed Wake Forest-Rolesville goes across town to face #3 seed Wakefield at 7pm
#2 seed Enloe hosts #7 seed Leesville Road at Enloe 7pm
-Wake Forest-Rolesville @ Wakefield winner vs. Millbrook at Broughton 7pm Thursday
-Sanderson @ Broughton winner vs. Leesville Road @ Enloe winner at Broughton 5:30pm Thursday
Conference skinny: The general public thinks this will come down to another cage match between Enloe and Millbrook. Not so fast, Wakefield has shown that they can beat both and should be in the discussion. Despite recent struggles since Matt James went down, Sanderson is a dark horse to make it to Friday.
