East Wake has been the surprise of the Triangle in conference tournament play thus far
Wednesday February 17, 2010
Cap-7 idle on Wednesday
Pac-6 results
#5 Southern Durham 75 - #4 Hillside 69
#2 East Chapel Hill 63 - #7 Person County 34
#3 Jordan 72 - #6 Northern Durham 64
-East Chapel Hill vs. Jordan 8:30pm at East Chapel Hill Thursday
-Southern Durham vs. Riverside 7pm at East Chapel Hill Thursday
Conference skinny: Riverside’s tournament to lose. The Pirates are #1 in our rankings and one of the best teams in the state, but do not be surprised if the disciplined Wildcats from East Chapel Hill make a run. Last season Southern Durham made an epic run thru the tournament, this season that team could be Hillside.
Update: Southern Durham is beginning like they did in last season’s conference tournament. If they can manage to knock off Riverside they will truly be on a roll. East Chapel Hill and Jordan are pretty evenly matched, this one could go into OT.
Greater Neuse results
Garner 79 - West Johnston 65
East Wake 61 - Knightdale 48
Championship- #6 East Wake vs. #1 Garner (Friday 7:30pm at Garner)
Conference skinny: The Garner Trojans are odds on favorites to win, but are probably hoping the Knightdale Knights are knocked off before Friday. The Knights are the only conference team to topple the Trojans twice this season.
Update: Knightdale will not upset Garner, because they were upset themselves by #6 seed East Wake. The Warriors can punch their ticket to the state tournament with a victory over top seeded Garner. Kasunn Williams is averaging 15ppg in the conference tournament for East Wake. Williams may be matched up with garner wing Donald Johnson who is averaging 20ppg in Trojan’s two tournament wins.
Tri-9 results
Middle Creek 62 - Panther Creek 46
Apex 57 - Athens Drive 50
Championship- #2 Middle Creek vs. #1 Apex (Friday 7:30pm at Panther Creek)
Conference skinny: Top seed Apex is ranked high in our rankings like the other conference top seeds. With only a single conference loss by one point, they are as well equipped as anyone to win their respective tournament. Panther Creek could shake things up if they do not go down to Lee County. The Panthers are the only team to defeat Apex and Middle Creek in conference play.
Update: Panther Creek made it past Lee County, but could not take care of Middle Creek, falling behind early to the Mustangs and never recovering. So far the higher seeds have held serve and that should not change Friday. Both coaches should have some tricks up their sleeve though.
