Wolverines take out #2 seed Enloe Eagles

Wakefield's Maurice Nash spots up for three vs. Charles Ashley of Enloe in the Cap-7 semis

Thursday February 18, 2010

Wow this was an intense game that, as cliché as it sounds, came down to the wire.  Wakefield and Enloe split the regular season matches and are very familiar with each other.

Wakefield gained early control by attacking the Enloe man to man defense.  Dominique McDonald repeatedly came off high screens and made the right decision once open, scoring or finding a teammate.  While they had their issues on defense, Enloe had an advantage inside on offense.  The Eagles can throw big body after rebound snatching big body at you, and the bigs performed great on Thursday night.

In the 2nd quarter, Enloe coach Tommy Moore noticed the issue with man to man and went to a 2-3 zone.  Despite being down 35-31 at halftime, Moore stayed with the 2-3 and it paid off.

The Eagles hunkered down on defense in the 3rd quarter, but Wakefield never seemed rattled, taking a 48-46 lead into the 4th.  In the 4th the teams traded blows.  Melvin Tabb scores on the block for the lead, Maurice Nash gets a three-point play, Charles Ashley knocks down a trey for the Eagles.

Enloe's Melvin Tabb goes in for a reverse on the break, two of his game-high 23 points vs. Wakefield

It was as close as 64-63 Wakefield’s advantage with 21.2 seconds remaining.  The Wolverines converted enough free throws to stomp out the Enloe surge, winning 70-66 and moving on to face Millbrook in the Cap-7 championship game.

Forward Keith Armstrong once again stood out for the Wolverines with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Nash led the Wolverines with 15 points and Dominique McDonald was steady at point guard with 14 points.  Xavier Saddler-Mee added 12 points.

Melvin Tabb played one of the best games I have ever seen him play, totaling 23 points and 12 rebounds.  Forward Marcus Walker continues to impress, finishing with 11 points.  Emanuel “Poobie” Chapman had another stellar outing with 13 points and 4 assists for the Eagles.
