1st Round Skinny: One thing is for sure, we know that at least six area teams will be bounced on Monday. Garner earned a top seed, but has a scary game against Greenville Rose. Rose typically gets pretty balanced scoring, but is a victim of self-inflicted inconsistent play. The Trojans should try to take control inside. Rose has risen to the occasion in other big games this season, so the Trojans should be careful.
Clayton has a chance to surprise Pine Forest. To get the win the Comets need to take care of the ball and connect with regularity from the outside. Defensively, the goal is stop one of the best scorers in the state, guard Ryan May. Slow down May and the Comets could move on.
Hillside had a disappointing PAC-6 tournament, but matches up well to stop Apex’s outside onslaught. The athletic Hornets do lack size, so if the Cougars want to avoid an upset, they should establish the inside game. Miykael Faulcon is Hilside’s top scorer, but Torian Graham can cause headaches for defenses as well. Mike Fogg is the catalyst for Apex, but the inside/outside skills of Weston Murphy may make the difference in this one.
Panther Creek has come out of tough challenges victorious on a couple of occasions this season for first year head coach Travis Chapman. The Catamounts will have their hands full with the battle tested Wolverines. Wakefield has experienced guards that can score and post players that clean up misses. Panther Creek guards Javonte Rankin and Isiah Johnson have been solid all season and have several games under their belt as well. We think Wakefield will win this one on the boards.
