Riverside's TJ Warren becomes first sophomore to win the MIPY

Wednesday March 31, 2010

As always this was a tough decision this year.  There were several other worthy candidates, like Melvin Tabb(Enloe), Weston Murphy(Apex), Donzell Hill(Millbrook), and Emanuel “Poobie” Chapman(Enloe).  Riverside’s TJ Warren stood out from the rest, helping lead the Pirates to a 26-4 record this season, even after Michael Mayer went down with an injury.

Warren was the Pirates’ leading scoring at over 16 points per contest and added more than 5 rebounds per game.  With a number of ways to put the ball in the basket in his repertoire, Warren has gained the attention of a number of universities already.  Tobacco road’s own North Carolina State has shown the most interest in a list that includes Virginia Tech, Indiana, Xavier, and South Carolina.

TJ Warren can score inside and out

With the departure of seniors Michael Mayer, David Mayer, Jarod Belvin, Tim Raven, Tevin Richardson, and Sean Deniton, coach Tim Ross will be relying on Warren to lead a cast of underclassmen to attempt to duplicate this year’s success.  When it comes to the M.I.P.Y., Warren has two more seasons for another first, Trianglehoops first repeat winner.

Past Winners:

Yorel Hawkins(Apex)-06/07

Garrius Adams(Middle Creek)-07/08
